Webmasters are concerned with their looks. Well, they aren’t as concerned with the way they look in person as they are with how great their site looks. Webmasters want a great looking site because it will help them stand out and will convince their visitors that they are the best and most authoritative voice in their particular market. WordPress is great because it can allow people to make really attractive custom themes for their blog or website. Custom themes don’t all have to be simple and boring, however, because there is just as much need for outstanding and creative themes as well.

Come Up with a Theme
This article is, obviously, about WordPress themes but I’m talking about the over all theme of your design. Coming up with good concepts such as night life, robots, crafts or fantasy can be a great way to get started in coming up with a highly creative theme.

Once you’ve come up with the concept that you would like to emulate you can begin thinking about the different elements of the custom WordPress theme itself. Every blog design will have a few things that need to be included. Almost every website has a header, footer, links and site navigation. These are all things that can be included in the concept of your new design.

Header
The header is an important aspect. Often called a banner, the header is the first thing that visitors will notice about a site. The header is where you can begin presenting the overall concept of your custom WordPress theme. A music site could include stage lights or a large crowd in the header. A medieval concept could include a castle, battlements or even armor. The idea here is to establish the concept of the custom WordPress theme as early as possible so that you create a cohesive design.

Footer
The footer is, basically, the opposite of the header and goes at the bottom of the site. Ideally, the footer should continue the concept that the header has started. A gardening blog could use grass or flowers. An automotive blog might want to use tail lights or tire tracks. Creating a great footer that matches and continues the concept of the header will help create a very cohesive feeling to the design of your custom theme.

Navigation
The site navigation is probably the next biggest element in your custom WordPress theme. Almost every website or blog will have some sort of site navigation and you want it to continue the theme you’ve started. Try to come up with some creative ways of presenting the site navigation links. A site about role playing games could use dice or swords. A blog about cats could use paw prints, mouse toys or even cans of food.

The more time you spend thinking about the concept of your custom WordPress theme the more unique it will become. There are quite a few people offering their custom themes for sale so it’s important to create themes that are unique, interesting and are not derivative of common designs. Coming up with a good concept can be the best way to start working on a custom WordPress theme. Take a few moments to consider the type of website you’ll be designing. Try to come up with a few things that really seem to represent this concept well.

Designing a custom WordPress theme based off of a creative concept is one of the best ways to create truly unique designs. It may seem a little tricky at first but once you have established the concept you should find it fairly easy to come up with an effective header that establishes the theme, site navigation that continues it and a footer that will tie the concept together.
